Books

Our instructors will often recommend books for guiding each student’s progress and they vary in price from $15-$30 for beginner books, up to $50-$75 for Repertoire, Studies, Technique and Theory from Royal Conservatory of Music and other schools.

We will often acquire the books, otherwise students and parents may find the books themselves between lessons. Let us know if you have a lesson book and your instructor will determine if it’s suitable for the student’s progress. It’s also essential to bring a notebook to record the instructor’s notes for practising through the week.

Encouragement

Improvement only comes with consistent practice so when learning a new instrument, it’s essential to schedule a consistent practice time every day. Students will need encouragement to continue, even (and especially) when it’s not sounding as they’d like it to sound.

Be sure to provide them with an adequate instrument (not a toy) and a quiet place (or time) where they can focus for 15-30 minutes (30- 60 minutes as they improve). Show interest in what they’re playing, and remember to look over any notes from their instructor. Communicate with the instructor any struggles or confusion you might notice and if you’d like, their instructor will be happy to demonstrate any examples at the beginning (or final) 5 minutes of a scheduled lesson time.
